Pharmaceutical Giant Cencora Faces Cyberattack

Picture this: you’re a pharmaceutical giant with billions of dollars in revenue and tens of thousands of employees. Your company, Cencora, specializes in providing essential drug distribution and solutions for doctor’s offices, pharmacies, and animal healthcare providers. Seems like smooth sailing, right? But then, one day, your company gets hit with a cyberattack.

Data Stolen from Corporate IT Systems

That’s exactly what happened to Cencora, which announced in an SEC filing that they suffered a cyberattack resulting in data theft. The company revealed that they learned about the data exfiltration on February 21, 2024, and that some of the stolen data may contain personal information.

Containing the Incident and Investigating

As soon as Cencora detected the unauthorized activity, they took immediate steps to contain the incident. They are currently working with law enforcement, external cybersecurity experts, and external counsel to investigate the attack. While it is still unclear if this incident will have a significant financial or operational impact, Cencora is doing everything in its power to mitigate the damage.

No Connection to Other Cyberattacks

We reached out to Cencora for more information about the incident, and they directed us to their statement in the SEC filing. They did, however, confirm that their cyberattack is unrelated to the recent Optum Change Healthcare ransomware attack, which has caused significant outages in pharmaceutical billing. According to Cencora, there is no reason to believe the two incidents are connected.

Who’s Behind the Attack?

At this time, it is unclear who is responsible for breaching Cencora’s IT systems, and no ransomware gangs have claimed responsibility. It is worth noting that a ransomware group called Lorenz previously claimed to have breached the company (then known as AmerisourceBergen) in February 2023, stating that they had stolen data related to the Animal Health division.

The Importance of Cybersecurity

This attack on Cencora serves as a stark reminder that no company, regardless of its size or resources, is immune to cyber threats. As we continue to rely on digital systems and networks, it is crucial for businesses to prioritize cybersecurity and invest in the necessary safeguards to protect their data and operations.
