Marina Bay Sands Discloses Data Breach Impacting 665,000 Customers

The luxury resort and casino, Marina Bay Sands (MBS), located in Singapore, has recently revealed a data breach that has affected the personal information of 665,000 customers.

According to the official statement, the security breach was identified on October 20th, when an unauthorized party gained access to data belonging to members of the MBS loyalty program.

“Marina Bay Sands became aware of a data security incident on October 20, 2023, involving unauthorized third-party access on October 19 and 20, 2023, to some of our customers’ loyalty program membership data,” reads the announcement.

Further investigations have determined that an unknown third party managed to access customer data of approximately 665,000 non-casino rewards program members, as stated by the company.

Type of Information Exposed in the Data Breach

  • Name
  • Email address
  • Mobile phone number
  • Phone number
  • Country of residence
  • Membership number and tier

This compromised data could potentially be exploited by attackers to target MBS customers through various scams, phishing attempts, and social engineering attacks.

It is important to note that the current evidence does not indicate any impact on casino members (Sands Rewards Club) as a result of this incident.

MBS has assured that affected customers will be individually notified regarding the breach and its impact on their personal data.

The resort promptly reported the incident to the authorities in Singapore and other relevant countries.

Although the full extent of the attack has not been publicly disclosed, it is possible that this intrusion could be linked to a ransomware attack. Threat actors often steal data from company networks and subsequently attempt to extort money from the victims.

However, as of now, no ransomware group has claimed responsibility for the attack on Marina Bay Sands.

We, at IT Services, reached out to the resort to request more information about the security incident. However, a spokesperson declined to provide any additional comments beyond the details mentioned in the official statement.
