Massive Data Breach Hits French Unemployment Agency: 43 Million People Affected by Cyber Invasion
France’s unemployment agency, Pôle Emploi, has suffered a data breach, impacting 4.3 million jobseekers. The breach exposed users’ email addresses, phone numbers, and other personal data, but no financial information was compromised. The agency is urging users to stay alert for phishing attacks and report any suspicious activity.

France Travail, previously known as Pôle Emploi, is the agency responsible for registering unemployed individuals, providing financial aid, and helping them find jobs. Recently, the agency disclosed that hackers had breached its systems, stealing details of job seekers registered with the agency in the last 20 years. The cyberattack occurred between February 6 and March 5, and data from individuals with job candidate profiles were also exposed.
According to a notice on France’s portal for assisting victims of cyberattacks, affected individuals will receive a notification from the agency regarding the personal data violation resulting from this incident.
How Many People Are Affected?
France Travail has informed the country’s data protection agency, the National Commission of Informatique and Liberties (CNIL), which stated that up to 43 million people may be impacted. The types of data exposed in this attack include full names, dates of birth, places of birth, social security numbers, France Travail identifiers, email addresses, postal addresses, and phone numbers.
What Are the Risks?
This data breach increases the risk of identity theft and phishing for the exposed individuals. As a result, the agency recommends that potentially impacted people be particularly vigilant with emails, phone calls, and SMS they receive. While the data breach incident does not impact people’s bank details or account passwords, CNIL warns that cybercriminals may use the available information to correlate with missing data points from other breaches.
